Don't be afraid to pressure your players with tough fights. Lancer gives PCs lots of different ways to protect or repair their mechs, even at low levels, so you can throw some scary looking stuff at them and expect them to live through it, if not unscathed.
Make sure that every fight has a clear objective, ideally something beyond just "destroy all enemies." You can see some really exciting gameplay when PCs can use their mechs' more esoteric abilities to accomplish goals in inventive ways.
Consider making your NPC antagonists surrender or attempt retreat when they no longer have a real chance of winning. Combat tends to get a lot less interesting when the enemies are no longer a believable threat.
As much as is feasible, give your NPC pilots callsigns, even if you don't plan for them to appear in more than one fight. Even if you're just calling them (Squad Name) + (number), it still makes it easier for players to follow what's happening in a fight, and it helps give the impression of a more coherent, populated setting.
Get feedback from your players after every session. Lancer is still a bit rough around the edges, and most of us playing it are still figuring out how best to use the system. Talking to your players about what does and doesn't work will help you get over that hurdle faster. You don't have share your group's feedback on the discord server if you don't feel like it, but I don't think anyone would turn it down if you offered.
