Ghost Diving (Empathy)
Ghost Diving is the skill that represents a character's ability to hack into another person's cyberbrain or ghost, allowing them to access the target's thoughts, memories, or even take control of their actions. This skill is highly specialized and can be extremely dangerous, as the hacker risks exposure to countermeasures or even getting lost in the target's mind.
To perform a Ghost Dive, the character needs to be in close proximity to the target (within Short range) or have access to a network connection through which they can reach the target's cyberbrain. The character then makes a Ghost Diving skill roll using their Empathy attribute.
Success: The character successfully hacks into the target's cyberbrain and can perform one of the following actions:
Extract Information: Access the target's memories to obtain specific information, such as a password, location, or knowledge of past events.
Plant False Memories: Alter the target's memories, causing them to believe something that is not true or to forget something important.
Control Actions: Temporarily take control of the target's body, forcing them to perform actions against their will.
Install Malware: Plant a virus or malware in the target's cyberbrain, causing various negative effects, such as impaired cognitive function or loss of control over cybernetic enhancements.
Failure: The character is unable to hack into the target's cyberbrain and may alert the target to their attempt, potentially triggering countermeasures or drawing unwanted attention.
Pushing: If the character decides to push their Ghost Diving roll, they risk causing harm to themselves or the target. On a bane, both the character and the target may suffer mental stress or damage to their cyberbrain, leading to potential long-term consequences.
Defending Against Ghost Diving: A character with the Hacking skill can attempt to defend against a Ghost Dive by making a Hacking roll using their Wits attribute. If successful, they can block the attacker's access or even counter-hack, potentially gaining access to the attacker's cyberbrain instead. Additionally, advanced cyberbrain security systems and firewalls can provide further protection against Ghost Diving attempts.

Cyberbrain Security Systems and Firewalls
Neural Intrusion Countermeasure (NIC) Firewall: A high-grade firewall designed specifically to protect cyberbrains from intrusion attempts. The NIC Firewall detects and blocks unauthorized access, and in some cases, can trace the source of the intrusion attempt.
Cerebral Encryption Protocol (CEP): A security system that encrypts the user's cyberbrain data, requiring a complex decryption process to access the information. The CEP can slow down or even prevent Ghost Diving attempts by requiring the attacker to bypass the encryption first.
Adaptive Neuro-Barrier (ANB): A dynamic cyberbrain security system that learns and adapts to intrusion attempts, making it increasingly difficult for hackers to breach. The ANB constantly updates its defenses, requiring Ghost Divers to adapt their strategies and techniques to maintain access.
Quantum Entanglement Security (QES): An advanced security system that employs quantum entanglement to create a virtually unhackable connection between a user's cyberbrain and a secure server. QES makes Ghost Diving attempts nearly impossible, as any intrusion would disrupt the quantum entanglement and immediately alert security personnel.
Ghost Intrusion Defense System (GIDS): A specialized security system designed to protect against Ghost Diving by simulating a virtual environment within the user's cyberbrain. When an unauthorized intrusion is detected, the GIDS traps the attacker in this virtual environment, keeping them occupied and separated from the user's actual cyberbrain data.
Biofeedback Countermeasure (BFC): A cyberbrain security system that retaliates against intruders by sending harmful biofeedback signals back to the attacker. The BFC can cause physical pain, disorientation, or even unconsciousness to the Ghost Diver, making it a risky and dangerous option for hackers to attempt.
Software than can be used to help in Ghost Diving, like attack programs or utilities
Neural Override Program (NOP): A specialized software designed to bypass cyberbrain security systems by exploiting known vulnerabilities or weak points in the target's defenses. The NOP assists Ghost Divers in gaining unauthorized access to the target's cyberbrain.
GhostLink: A utility that provides a secure, encrypted connection for Ghost Divers, allowing them to remain hidden and undetected while performing their intrusion attempts. GhostLink also offers additional tools for reconnaissance, data extraction, and secure communication.
CyberPulse: A software that scans the target's cyberbrain for weak points, helping Ghost Divers identify the most efficient and effective entry points. CyberPulse also provides real-time updates on the target's defenses, allowing the attacker to adapt their strategy accordingly.
MindMapper: A utility that creates a visual representation of the target's cyberbrain architecture, making it easier for Ghost Divers to navigate and locate specific data or systems. MindMapper also allows the attacker to set waypoints and track their progress during the intrusion.
Synaptic Disruptor: An attack program that targets the target's neural connections, causing temporary disorientation, confusion, or memory loss. The Synaptic Disruptor can be used by Ghost Divers to create a distraction or delay the target's response to the intrusion.
Data Leech: A software designed to extract valuable information from the target's cyberbrain quickly and efficiently. The Data Leech can search for specific data types or keywords, allowing the Ghost Diver to obtain the desired information without having to manually search through the target's memories and thoughts.
GhostWard: A defensive utility that provides additional protection for the Ghost Diver, shielding them from countermeasures such as biofeedback or intrusion detection systems. GhostWard can also alert the attacker of incoming threats, giving them time to react and evade potential danger.
Cyberbrain
Description: A cyberbrain is an advanced piece of cyberware that encloses the user's organic brain within a protective shell, allowing users to directly interface with computers, networks, and other cybernetic systems. This shell integrates electronic components with neural tissue, enhancing cognitive abilities, memory storage, and communication capabilities while providing access to the vast amount of information available on digital networks.
In the most common variations, the organic brain remains largely intact, with the cyberbrain merely augmenting its natural functions. However, some users may choose or be forced to replace portions of their organic brain due to illness, accidents, or personal choice. This can result in the replacement of up to around 20% of the original brain tissue, which may cause detached personalities, autism, or similar psychological effects.
How it Works: The cyberbrain is implanted within the user's skull, connecting directly to the neural pathways and integrating seamlessly with the organic brain. It utilizes advanced nanotechnology and biocompatible materials to ensure smooth functioning and minimize the risk of rejection or complications. The user can interface with various systems via wireless connections or direct neural links, sending and receiving data at lightning-fast speeds.
In-Game Benefits:
Actions:
Inherent Protections: Cyberbrains come with built-in security features to protect the user from unauthorized access, such as intrusion detection systems and firewalls. Improved versions of cyberbrains can have stronger and more advanced protection systems to further safeguard against hacking attempts.
Improved Versions: Higher-grade cyberbrains can provide even greater cognitive enhancements, faster data transfer rates, and stronger security features. Some advanced cyberbrains may also offer specialized functions, such as improved sensory input integration, advanced multitasking capabilities, or built-in AI support.
Complications and Weaknesses: While cyberbrains offer numerous benefits, they also come with potential risks and drawbacks. Users are more vulnerable to hacking attempts, potentially exposing their thoughts, memories, and even their very sense of self to malicious attackers. Additionally, users may experience complications due to hardware or software issues, such as glitches, malfunctions, or incompatibilities with other cybernetic enhancements. Furthermore, constant exposure to digital networks may increase the risk of developing addiction or dependency on the cyberbrain's capabilities, leading to social isolation or psychological issues.
